About Sui

SUI pays network fees and is staked to secure Sui, a fast proof-of-stake blockchain for apps and payments.

Sui is a public blockchain designed to run applications quickly and cheaply. Its mainnet genesis was on 12 April 2023. It was built by the company Mysten Labs, and it uses the Move programming language. SUI is the network's native coin: it pays for computation and data storage, and holders stake it with validators, the computers that confirm transactions and vote on upgrades.

The total supply of SUI is fixed at 10 billion. About 4.1 billion SUI was in circulation on 27 September 2026; the rest is locked and released in stages to the community reserve, early contributors, investors and Mysten Labs, with about half of all supply reported as released only after 2030. Staking rewards come from transaction fees and from a pre-set subsidy fund (about 234 million SUI), which pays a fixed amount each day that shrinks by 10% every 90 days.

Sui hosts decentralised exchanges, lending apps, liquid staking and about $480 million of stablecoins. Since February 2026 US investors can also hold SUI through spot exchange-traded funds: Canary's and Grayscale's funds started trading on 18 February 2026 and stake the coins they hold, and a 21Shares fund followed on 24 February.

About 127 validators secure the network. In May 2025, after a $223 million hack of the Cetus exchange, validators blacklisted the attacker's addresses, freezing about $162 million, and a governance vote then approved an upgrade moving those funds into a trust for return to users. This protected victims, but some critics saw validators' ability to freeze funds as a weakness for decentralisation.
