About Gate
GT is the token of the Gate crypto exchange, used to pay network fees and get trading discounts.
GateToken (GT) was created by Gate, formerly Gate.io, a large centralised crypto exchange. GT was first issued through Gate Points in April 2019, and Gate dates its launch to 21 April 2019, when trading began. Its Ethereum (ERC-20) contract followed on 9 May 2019. GT is also the native coin of Gate's own blockchain, Gate Chain.
GT started with a supply of 300 million tokens, which Gate describes as fixed. Gate says it uses about 20% of its revenue, mainly from trading fees, to buy back GT and burn it, usually every quarter. After the Q2 2026 burn, about 189.9 million GT, or 63% of the original supply, had been destroyed. Gate's GT page shows about 97.8 million GT in circulation and 12.3 million frozen; data sites give somewhat different figures.
GT pays transaction fees on Gate Chain, an EVM-compatible blockchain, and on Gate Layer, a faster Layer 2 network built on the OP Stack that Gate launched in September 2025. Holders can stake GT on Gate Chain. On the Gate exchange, GT lowers trading fees and gives access to token launches, Launchpool rewards and HODLer Airdrops.
Gate controls the token, the chains and the burns. It holds licences in several places, including a MiCA licence in Malta and a VARA licence in Dubai, and serves US users only through a separate company, Gate US. It left Japan in 2024 while unregistered there and now has a registered Japanese subsidiary. Most of Gate's trading volume is in futures and other derivatives.
