Gate
GT#75GT is the token of the Gate crypto exchange, used to pay network fees and get trading discounts.
Does not clear all 8 Shariah criteria. Needs caution: nature of the asset, gambling (maysir), business model, excessive uncertainty (gharar), usage, and benefit and harm (maslahah).

Can a Muslim hold Gate?8 Shariah criteria
2 pass · 6 caution · 0 failHolding GT pays no interest; staking rewards on Gate Chain are paid for validation work, while Gate's interest-bearing Earn products are separate.
Riba means interest or any fixed increase on a loan. This criterion asks whether simply holding GT produces interest. It does not: GT pays nothing to its holder by itself. On Gate Chain, proof-of-stake rewards are paid to those who stake GT to secure the network; Gate says about 8.55 million GT were issued this way over about 5.5 years, around 0.99% a year, which is payment for validation work rather than interest. Gate's quarterly buyback and burn reduces supply but is not a payment to holders.
Gate Simple Earn, which lends deposited GT to other users and pays the interest, is an optional exchange product assessed under lending and yield. The score sits low in the pass band because the GateChain website advertises staking returns of up to 20% without explaining their source.
GT is the working gas token of two Gate networks and has exchange utility, but authoritative bodies disagree whether crypto tokens are property (mal).
GT pays transaction fees on Gate Chain and Gate Layer, is staked to secure them, and gives fee discounts, token-launch access and airdrops on the Gate exchange. That is real utility, not an empty record. Much of its value, however, rests on the exchange: the burns are funded from Gate's revenue and the main perks exist only on Gate.
On whether such tokens are property (mal), Malaysia's Securities Commission Shariah Advisory Council treats a digital currency without an underlying asset as a tradable good, while Darul Uloom Karachi (2026) says crypto tokens are not property, Indonesia's MUI holds crypto is not valid to trade as a commodity without an underlying, and state fatwa bodies in Egypt, Turkey and the UAE have rejected cryptocurrency generally. This disagreement keeps the criterion at caution.
GT has a real function, but the exchange it serves is dominated by derivatives, and Gate Layer hosts a meme-token launcher.
Maysir means gambling, or gains that depend mainly on chance; ordinary price swings are not maysir. GT is not a meme or betting token: it pays gas and is staked. But the activity around it is heavily speculative. On 27 September 2026 CoinGecko showed about 6 times more 24-hour volume on Gate's futures market than on its spot market, and CCData found that in August 2026 Gate's perpetual futures on real-world assets alone ($64.7B) exceeded its entire spot volume ($40.0B). Gate's Q2 2026 report highlights CFD trading and places Gate in the top three for derivatives.
On Gate Layer, where GT is the gas token, Gate launched Gate Fun, a Pump.fun-style token launcher, and Gate Perp, a perpetuals hub. Because GT has a real function, this is caution, not fail, with a score near the lower part of the band.
GT's burns are funded by Gate's revenue, which very likely comes largely from derivatives and may include lending interest, but Gate publishes no revenue split, so the 20% and 5% limits cannot be tested.
For exchange tokens, the test looks at the income of the issuing exchange; fees from leveraged trading are disputed activity with a 20% limit, and interest is clearly impermissible with a 5% limit (AAOIFI Shari'ah Standard 20 treats futures without delivery as impermissible). The link is direct for GT: Gate says about 20% of platform revenue, mainly trading fees, buys back GT for the burns, which usually take place quarterly. Gate publishes no revenue breakdown.
Its volumes point to derivatives: CCData found its real-world-asset perpetuals alone exceeded its spot volume in August 2026, CoinGecko showed futures volume about 6 times spot on 27 September 2026, and its Q2 2026 report cites CFD weekly volume above $150 billion. Gate also runs Simple Earn, which lends user funds to borrowers, but its own interest income is undisclosed. Because the revenue mix is not measured, this stays at caution rather than fail; the score is at the bottom of the band because derivatives very likely form a large share of the revenue behind the burns.
The supply cap and burns are published, but Gate controls the token, chains and frozen reserve, supply figures disagree, and its reserves are self-reported.
Gharar means excessive uncertainty or hidden terms. Some things are clear: GT's original supply was fixed at 300 million, and Gate publishes each quarterly burn, with 189.9 million GT burned by July 2026. But control is concentrated in one company that runs the exchange, Gate Chain and Gate Layer. Gate's GT page shows 12.25 million GT frozen without a published release schedule, and circulating and maximum supply figures differ between Gate's own pages and CoinGecko (for example 97.8 million versus 106.6 million circulating).
The GateChain GitHub organisation publishes node binaries, and no current open-source node code or technical documentation was located. Gate's proof of reserves (115% in Q2 2026) uses a Merkle tree with zk-SNARKs and cites a 2024 Hacken audit, not a full financial audit. This is partial opacity, so caution; it is not fail, because the 300 million cap and burns are on-chain.
GT is used for gas, staking and exchange perks, but its own networks now host a meme-token launcher and a perpetuals hub.
GT's basic uses are permissible in themselves: paying gas on Gate Chain and Gate Layer, staking, and fee discounts on Gate. But a notable part of the activity GT is designed to serve is disputed. Since September 2025 GT is the gas token of Gate Layer, whose flagship apps include Gate Fun, a Pump.fun-style launcher for new tokens, and Gate Perp, a perpetual-futures hub. On the exchange, GT perks such as fee discounts apply across a venue where derivatives far exceed spot, and GT can be placed in Simple Earn, which lends it out for interest.
No data measure what share of GT use goes to these purposes, so this is caution rather than fail.
GT can be bought on the spot market with full payment and held in self-custody as an ERC-20 token or on Gate's own chains.
This criterion only asks whether GT can be owned in a permissible form. GT trades on the spot market of Gate, one of the largest spot exchanges, can be paid for in full, and can be withdrawn to a personal wallet as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum or as a native coin on Gate Chain and Gate Layer; Gate says it now moves GT between these chains through an on-chain mechanism. GT does not exist only as a leveraged or derivative wrapper. The score is not higher because spot liquidity is concentrated on Gate itself and no fund holding GT was found.
Gate's chains offer cheap infrastructure, but the ecosystem GT supports is built around leveraged trading and token speculation, and Gate has operated without registration in some markets.
Maslahah means weighing real benefit against real harm. On the benefit side, Gate Chain and Gate Layer offer low-cost, fast transactions, and Gate reports reserves above customer balances (115% in Q2 2026) and licences in Malta, Dubai, Japan and US states. On the harm side, the ecosystem GT fuels leans heavily toward leveraged derivatives and a meme-token launcher.
Gate has also served markets without authorisation: in July 2024 it announced the end of its services for Japan, where Gate.io was not registered with the regulator, which had earlier warned other exchanges about operating without registration; it now serves Japan through a registered subsidiary. GT itself is not mainly a tool for fraud or sanctions evasion, so harm does not dominate, but it is significant.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesSpot GT with full, immediate payment is available on Gate and can be withdrawn to a personal wallet. Spot is rated acceptable for a DOUBTFUL asset; the doubts concern the asset and its issuer, not the spot method.
No fund or exchange-traded product that holds GT was found, so this route is not available. Gate's own "ETF" trading pairs are exchange products, not funds holding GT, and are not assessed as ETFs here.
GT pays network fees on Gate Chain and Gate Layer; no data on its use for everyday payments were found. Tier-1 bodies such as MUI (Indonesia, 2021) prohibit crypto as a means of payment, so this use is caution.
Staking GT on Gate Chain secures the network and Gate reports average rewards of about 0.99% a year, which would be payment for validation work. But the GateChain site also advertises returns of up to 20% without explaining their source, and Gate's exchange 'staking' products such as Launchpool are different, so the structure is unclear and rated caution.
Always fail: borrowing with leverage and deferred exchange without delivery (AAOIFI SS 20).
Always fail: futures, perpetuals and options are deferred exchange without delivery, with leverage (AAOIFI SS 20). Gate is a leading derivatives venue.
Lending GT for a return is riba: Gate Simple Earn lends deposited GT to other users and passes on the interest (0.67% APR on 27 September 2026).
Simple Earn yield on GT comes from lending interest, so it fails. Launchpool and HODLer Airdrop rewards come from projects launching on Gate, and their source is not clearly stated; native Gate Chain staking is covered under staking.
