Can a Muslim hold Bitway?8 Shariah criteria
1 pass · 7 caution · 0 failHolding BTW pays nothing, but its main use is staking into a vault whose return comes from undisclosed exchange trading and is settled at a fixed rate.
Riba means interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. Simply holding BTW earns nothing, and BTW is not a lending token. Its main use, however, is staking: Bitway Earn has a BTW vault (bwBTW), and its docs say staked assets are moved to custodial accounts, including centralised exchanges, and 'deployed into diverse trading strategies', with returns from 'institutional yield strategies on centralized exchanges'. The strategies are not named.
The docs also say yields are 'settled back into the staking vault at a fixed rate, with any surplus yield retained as platform revenue', and campaigns advertised stated APRs (18%, 12% and 8% on USDT deposits in 2026). A return fixed in advance on money handed to a platform is the shape of an interest-bearing deposit, not of profit-and-loss sharing. Because the source of the yield is undisclosed and its terms are not a fixed loan contract, the status is caution rather than fail, at the bottom of the caution band.
BTW is a platform token with limited utility — product access, reward boosts and governance — and official religious bodies disagree on whether cryptocurrency is property (mal).
Mal is property that Islamic law recognises as having value and that can be owned and traded. BTW is not the fee coin of a working blockchain: Bitway's docs list its uses as staking for access to selected products, boosted rewards and fee benefits, partner and liquidity incentives, and governance votes. The product it serves, Bitway Earn, is real and held about $76 million of deposits on 27 September 2026, but the token's value is not a claim on those deposits or on platform revenue.
Among tier-1 bodies, Malaysia's Securities Commission Shariah Advisory Council (2020) treats digital currency without an underlying asset as tradable goods on registered exchanges, while Egypt's Dar al-Ifta (2017), the UAE General Authority of Islamic Affairs (2018), Turkey's Diyanet (2017) and Indonesia's MUI (2021) prohibit dealing in cryptocurrency, and the OIC Fiqh Academy (2019) deferred a ruling. None names BTW.
BTW is not a gambling token, but its market is dominated by leveraged futures and its price rose over a hundredfold in seven months.
Maysir is gambling: winning or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. Ordinary price swings are not maysir, and BTW has no chance-based payout of its own. Its market is extremely speculative, though. On 27 September 2026, BTWUSDT perpetual futures traded about $130 million on Binance and $28 million on Bybit in 24 hours, against about $31 million of spot volume across all exchanges on CoinGecko: futures on those two venues alone were about 84% of the total.
Perpetual contracts with up to 10–20x leverage were listed in June 2026, after which the price rose from about $0.012 to $0.40 in August and to an all-time high of about $1.37 on 26 September, against a $0.008 public sale price in January 2026. BTW's market value is about 39 times the deposits in the product it serves. A real function exists (staking and governance for Bitway Earn), so the status is caution at the bottom of the band rather than fail.
Bitway earns the surplus of undisclosed exchange trading strategies over a fixed rate paid to depositors; the revenue mix is unknown and likely relies on derivatives.
This criterion asks how the issuer or protocol earns, and whether any of that income is impermissible. Bitway charges users no management or performance fees. Its docs say vault yields are settled to depositors at a fixed rate and 'any surplus yield' is kept as platform revenue, so the platform earns whatever its trading strategies make above that rate.
Bitway says only that Bitway Earn 'may incorporate market-neutral trading strategies', run on centralised exchanges; DefiLlama, a data aggregator, classes Bitway Earn as basis trading, which profits from the gap between spot and futures prices and normally relies on perpetual futures or borrowing. Futures and margin are impermissible (AAOIFI SS 20). Because Bitway does not disclose the strategies or their revenue split, the impermissible share cannot be measured, which rates caution; if basis trading were confirmed from a primary source, the criterion would fail.
Strategies and custodians are undisclosed, the whitepaper is marked outdated, supply figures differ between sources, and about 73% of BTW is still locked.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information in a deal. The BTW supply is fixed and checkable: the BNB Chain contract reports 10 billion BTW. Much else is opaque. Bitway does not name its trading strategies, its custodians or the legal entity behind Bitway Earn; the contracts are audited, but the off-chain positions and exchange accounts where most deposits sit are not. Withdrawals can take up to seven days and may be paused in extreme market conditions.
The whitepaper is marked 'outdated' and the docs do not publish the token allocation; third-party trackers report 22% unlocked at launch and a 12-month cliff for the team (20%) and backers (16.33%) ending around March 2027, so large unlocks lie ahead. The project's own circulating-supply figure (2.2 billion) lagged the on-chain vesting of about 508 million more BTW by August 2026.
BTW is used mainly for staking into a fixed-rate yield vault, governance and speculative trading.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. BTW is not used for payments or computation. Its uses are staking in Bitway Earn (including the bwBTW vault), reward boosts, governance votes and campaign incentives; the product it supports is a yield platform that pays depositors a fixed rate from undisclosed exchange trading. A large share of BTW activity is leveraged futures trading. None of this is proven to be interest-based finance as the main purpose, so the status is caution rather than fail.
Fully paid spot BTW is available on several exchanges, and it can be held in one's own BNB Chain wallet.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. BTW trades spot with full payment and delivery on exchanges such as Gate, Bitget and MEXC and on Binance Alpha, and it is an ordinary BEP-20 token that can be withdrawn to a self-custody wallet. It has no Binance main spot market, and much of its volume is in futures, but ownership does not depend on derivatives.
Bitway offers a working yield product, but a token valued far above its underlying business and driven by leveraged trading exposes late buyers to large losses.
Maslahah weighs public benefit against harm. The benefit is modest: Bitway Earn is a functioning, audited on-chain entry point to its strategies with about $76 million of deposits. The harms are custody and concentration risk (deposits sit with centralised exchanges and custodians that are not named, and withdrawals can be paused) and a market structure that invites losses for retail buyers: BTW's market value is about 39 times Bitway Earn's deposits and its fully diluted value about 144 times, most of its volume is leveraged futures, and about 73% of supply is still to unlock.
No fraud or exploitation has been shown, so the status is caution. Speculative trading losses are counted under maysir, not again here.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesSpot BTW with full payment and delivery is available on exchanges such as Gate and Bitget, and on Binance Alpha. Spot is acceptable only for a HALAL or DOUBTFUL asset; BTW is rated HARAM, so buying it spot does not pass.
No exchange-traded fund or ETP holding BTW was found, so there is no fund structure to assess.
BTW is not used as a means of payment, and tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible.
BTW staking is not validation of a network: tokens go into Bitway Earn vaults (such as bwBTW), are sent to custodial accounts for exchange trading strategies that are not disclosed, and earn a return settled at a fixed rate. The structure is unclear and resembles a deposit, so it is caution.
Margin trading in BTW is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
BTW perpetual futures on Binance, Bybit, Gate and Bitget make up most of its trading volume, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending BTW on exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays interest from borrowers. This is riba.
Bitway Earn vaults, including the BTW vault, pay yield settled at a fixed rate from exchange trading strategies that are not disclosed and that DefiLlama classes as basis trading, and campaigns advertise stated APRs. A predetermined return on deposited capital fails Shariah screening.
