Bitcoin has no company or founder in charge. Bitcoin Core, the reference software, has five maintainers as of September 2026: sedited joined in January 2026 and glozow stepped down in February 2026. Many contributors are funded by non-profits such as Brink and OpenSats. Rule changes need broad agreement: in August 2026 the contested BIP-110 soft fork failed with about 2.5% miner support, which shows that no small group can change the rules alone. Releases are regular: Core 31.1 in July 2026, with 32.0 targeted for 10 October 2026.

Bitcoin had no token sale, venture round or premine; all coins came from mining. Its institutional base is now deep. US spot Bitcoin ETFs held about $103 billion on 3 September 2026, and BlackRock's IBIT reported net assets of about $59.7 billion on 15 September 2026. Strategy held 845,050 BTC, more than 4% of the supply cap. Flows swing: ETFs took in $3.52 billion in August 2026, while the small Hashdex ETF (about $14.7 million) closed in August as inflows dwindled. The US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve had made no purchases as of July 2026.

Supply is capped at 21 million BTC and about 95.64% had been issued by 16 September 2026. Annual supply inflation is about 0.82%, falling to about 0.40% after the next halving, expected around April 2028. There are no unlocks and no team or investor allocations. Coins attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto are put at about 1.1 million BTC, over 5% of the cap. The long-term question is whether fees will pay miners enough as the subsidy shrinks: fees averaged only about $237,000 a day in late August and early September 2026.

Hashrate was about 969 EH/s in mid-September 2026 and the next difficulty adjustment was projected at about +4.6%; this makes the network very expensive to attack. The chain processed about 708,600 transactions a day between 24 August and 15 September 2026, while fees stayed low at 1–5 sat/vB. Weak spots: the top five mining pools mined about 77% of blocks in the week to 16 September, and Google Quantum AI researchers estimate that about 6.7 million BTC sit in addresses exposed to a future quantum attack, while quantum-resistance proposals (BIP 360, BIP 361) are still drafts.
