Liberandum halal verdict

Suitable with care

Not suitableSuitable

OKX is a large exchange with monthly proof of reserves and licences in the EU and Dubai, but it has no Islamic account and no Shariah screening of listed tokens. Muslim users can use its spot market with full settlement, while avoiding margin, futures, options, loans and fixed-yield Earn products.

Use

  • Spot trading
  • Convert (instant swap)

Avoid

  • Margin, futures, options
  • Loans, Earn, structured products
More details

Spot trading on OKX settles immediately and in full, which meets the conditions for a valid exchange of assets (AAOIFI Shariah Standard 1 on trading in currencies and Standard 20 on commodity sales: immediate delivery, no deferred leg). The same platform prominently offers margin trading, perpetual futures, options, crypto loans and interest-style Earn/Savings products. Margin and loans involve interest (riba); futures and options are contracts on assets that are not delivered and carry excessive uncertainty (gharar), so they fail AAOIFI standards; fixed-yield lending and savings products are riba. OKX does not offer an Islamic or swap-free account, a Shariah-certified earn product or a Shariah-screened token catalogue, so each coin must be checked separately. Reliability is moderate to good (6.7/10). OKX has published monthly proof of reserves since November 2022, using zk-STARK liability proofs since March 2023; the September 2026 report (47th) shows reserve ratios of 109% BTC, 101% ETH, 105% USDT and 100% USDC, but it is self-published rather than attested by an auditor. OKX Europe holds a MiCA CASP authorisation from Malta's MFSA and OKX Middle East holds a Dubai VARA VASP licence (September 2024). The main negative is regulatory: in February 2025 the OKX operating entity Aux Cayes FinTech pleaded guilty in the US to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and agreed to pay over USD 500 million; Malta's FIAU fined OKCoin Europe EUR 1,054,269 for AML breaches in April 2025, and the Dutch central bank fined OKX EUR 2.25 million for operating without registration in September 2025. No loss of customer funds has been reported in the last five years. Availability: OKX's official list of Restricted Locations (updated July 2026) includes Malaysia and Uzbekistan among Muslim-majority markets, and in the UK derivatives, CeFi and P2P services are restricted. Gulf, North African and South Asian users are generally served by the Seychelles entity without a local licence, except UAE users, who are served by the VARA-licensed OKX Middle East.

No dedicated halal product

OKX does not offer an Islamic (swap-free) account or a Shariah-certified earn or staking product as of September 2026. No Shariah board, certificate or fatwa for any OKX product was found on the OKX website or in reputable sources.

No token screening

OKX does not screen listed tokens for Shariah compliance and has no Shariah-screened catalogue. Its listing reviews and risk warnings cover fraud and technical risk, not Islamic criteria, so every coin must be checked separately before buying.

Step by step

How to trade halal on OKX

  1. Open an account and pass KYC

Register on okx.com or the OKX app and complete identity verification (ID and selfie). UAE residents are onboarded by OKX Middle East, EEA residents by OKX Europe; this decides which products and fiat rails you see.

  2. Deposit without interest-bearing products

Use Assets > Deposit for crypto, or Buy crypto (Express or P2P) for fiat. Keep funds in the Funding or Trading account and do not move them into Earn, Simple Earn, Savings or Loan products, which pay or charge interest.

  3. Check the coin first

Before buying, check the coin's halal status on Liberandum. OKX does not screen tokens for Shariah compliance, so a coin being listed says nothing about its permissibility.

  4. Buy on the spot market only

Use Trade > Spot or Trade > Convert, where the trade settles immediately in full. Keep the spot account in simple (non-margin) mode and do not enable auto-borrow.

  5. Avoid prohibited products

Do not use Trade > Margin, Futures, Perpetual swaps, Options, leveraged or structured products, Copy trading of derivatives, Loan, or fixed-yield Earn. These involve interest, undelivered contracts or excessive uncertainty.

  6. Withdraw to self-custody

For long-term holding, use Assets > Withdraw to move coins to a wallet you control, and enable 2FA, passkey and a withdrawal address allowlist in the security settings.

Reliability in detail

Overall 6.7 of 10

  • Proof of reserves

    7.0

Monthly proof of reserves since November 2022, with zk-STARK liability proofs since March 2023 and open-source user verification; the 47th report (September 2026) shows 109% BTC, 101% ETH, 105% USDT, 100% USDC. The proof is self-published cryptography, not an auditor attestation or financial audit.

  • Licences

    8.0

MiCA CASP authorisation for OKX Europe Limited from Malta's MFSA; Dubai VARA VASP licence VL/23/12/003 (17 September 2024); US users served by OKX INC. since the April 2025 expansion. Most other users are served by the Seychelles entity without local licences.

  • Incident history

    6.0

No customer-fund hack or unreimbursed loss reported in the last five years. In February 2025 Aux Cayes FinTech pleaded guilty in the US to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and agreed to pay over USD 500 million; Malta's FIAU fined OKCoin Europe EUR 1,054,269 (April 2025) and the Dutch central bank fined OKX EUR 2.25 million (September 2025).

  • Segregation of funds

    5.0

The MiCA-authorised EU entity is legally required to segregate client crypto-assets. For the global entity, 1:1 backing is shown only through self-published proof of reserves; no independent audit confirming legal segregation was found.

  • Insurance fund

    5.0

OKX describes a Security Fund for market-risk protection, but no official disclosure of its size and wallet addresses was found. It is not insurance for individual account losses.

  • Security practices

    9.0

Most assets in offline cold storage with multi-signature authorisation; 2FA, passkeys and withdrawal allowlists; SOC 2 Type 2 (announced September 2023) and SOC 1 Type 2 (July 2024, examination of OKX Bahamas) by an independent auditor.
