Liberandum halal verdict

Suitable with care

Not suitableSuitable

Luno is a spot-only exchange licensed in Malaysia, Indonesia and South Africa, with monthly proof of reserves attested by Moore. In Malaysia it offers Shariah-certified staking for ETH, SOL and ADA. It is suitable with care: trade spot, avoid fixed-yield products and check each coin on Liberandum.

Use

  • Spot trading (Buy/Sell, Exchange)
  • Certified staking (ETH, SOL, ADA in Malaysia)

Avoid

  • Fixed-yield savings products
  • Tokens off the Shariah list without a separate check
More details

Luno offers spot trading (Buy/Sell and the Luno Exchange order book) with immediate settlement, which meets the AAOIFI requirement of hand-to-hand exchange (Shariah Standard No. 1 and No. 20). Luno does not offer margin, futures or options, which removes the main prohibited products found on larger exchanges. Users should still avoid any yield product that pays a set return on deposited coins or stablecoins, because a fixed return on a loan-like deposit is riba. Luno Malaysia offers Shariah-certified staking: Ethereum staking certified by Amanie Advisors (announced December 2024) and Solana and Cardano staking certified by Sharlife (Amanie Advisors is a Shariah adviser registered with the Securities Commission Malaysia). Staking rewards come from network validation rather than lending. On its Malaysian Shariah page Luno also marks 12 listed assets as Shariah-compliant under Securities Commission standards; this is a label for part of the Malaysian catalogue, not a screen of all listed tokens, and Liberandum's own verdict per coin still applies. Reliability is moderate to good. Luno publishes monthly proof-of-reserves reports prepared by Moore Johannesburg with a Merkle-tree verifier (announced February 2024; latest report seen for December 2025), stating 1:1 backing of customer crypto. It holds a Recognized Market Operator registration from the Securities Commission Malaysia, an OJK licence in Indonesia (2026), an FSCA financial services provider licence in South Africa, an approval-in-principle from the Nigerian SEC and a Bermuda Monetary Authority Class F licence (August 2026). No hack with customer losses was found, but when leaving the EEA Luno blocked crypto transfers to external wallets from 29 June 2026, so EU users could only sell and withdraw fiat. Weak points: the terms allow pooled blockchain addresses and state that fiat deposits pass into Luno's ownership in exchange for a wallet credit, no independent confirmation of segregation was found, and no protection fund is disclosed. The reliability score is 6.5 out of 10. As of September 2026 Luno serves retail users mainly in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Indonesia and Malaysia. It closed its EEA service on 31 August 2026 (it has no MiCA authorisation and calls the exit a commercial decision), and it does not operate in the US. No information was found on retail service in the Gulf states, Turkey or Pakistan.

Shariah-compliant earn

In Malaysia, Luno's Ethereum staking is certified Shariah-compliant by Amanie Advisors and its Solana and Cardano staking by Sharlife. Luno says certifications are renewed annually. The contract type (e.g. wakalah) is not published.

  • Shariah-compliant Ethereum staking (Luno Malaysia)

Stake ETH from 0.00001 ETH or RM1; rewards (reported at launch as up to 2.5–3 % a year, variable) are paid weekly in ETH. No staking or unstaking fee; Luno deducts a service fee from rewards.

Structure · Certified by Amanie Advisors (announced December 2024). Luno states that staked tokens stay in the customer's ownership and are not lent to anyone; rewards come from network validation fees. The contract type is not published on the pages reviewed. Offered in Malaysia.

  • Shariah-compliant Solana and Cardano staking (Luno Malaysia)

Staking of SOL and ADA through Luno's validator partner, with variable network rewards.

Structure · Certified by Sharlife, a Shariah advisory firm (named on Luno Malaysia's Shariah page and newsroom); Luno says certifications are renewed annually. Tokens are staked, not lent. Contract type not published on the pages reviewed.

Partial token screening

On its Malaysian Shariah page Luno marks 12 assets (BTC, ETH, SOL, ADA, LINK, AVAX, POL, ATOM, XLM, LTC, XRP, UNI) as Shariah-compliant under Securities Commission Malaysia standards, with annual renewal. This covers only part of the Malaysian catalogue, not all markets or listed tokens.

Step by step

How to trade halal on Luno

  1. Create an account and complete KYC

Sign up on luno.com or the Luno app in a supported country (Malaysia, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya), verify your ID and selfie, and enable two-factor authentication.

  2. Deposit local currency by bank transfer

Fund your local-currency wallet (MYR, IDR, NGN or ZAR) by bank transfer. Luno's wallet credit pays no interest to you; do not move funds into USDC Earn or any product with a set yield.

  3. Check each coin on Liberandum

Luno's Shariah page lists 12 assets as Shariah-compliant in Malaysia, but check every coin's status on Liberandum before buying, especially tokens outside that list.

  4. Buy on spot: Buy/Sell or Exchange

Use Buy/Sell for simple purchases or Exchange for order-book trading with lower fees. Both settle immediately. Luno has no margin, futures or options.

  5. Use only certified staking

In Malaysia you can stake ETH (certified by Amanie Advisors) or SOL and ADA (certified by Sharlife) through Staking. Avoid yield products outside these certifications.

  6. Withdraw long-term holdings to self-custody

Luno may hold customer crypto in pooled addresses. For long-term holdings, send coins from your Luno wallet to your own hardware or software wallet.
