Liberandum halal verdict

Suitable with care

Not suitableSuitable

Kraken is a long-running, widely licensed exchange with quarterly proof of reserves and no major hack of client funds. Spot trading with full settlement is available, but Kraken offers no Shariah-certified product and does not screen coins, so a Muslim user must stay in spot, avoid margin, futures and rewards programmes, and check each coin separately.

Use

  • Spot trading, coin by coin

Avoid

  • Margin, futures, derivatives
  • Earn, rewards, DeFi Earn
More details

Spot purchases on Kraken settle immediately into the user's account, which meets the requirement of immediate exchange (qabd) for currency-like assets under AAOIFI Shariah Standard 1 and Standard 20. Margin trading, futures and other derivatives (Kraken Derivatives, Crypto Facilities), and leveraged positions do not meet these conditions: they involve interest-bearing borrowing or deferred settlement of both counter-values, and should be avoided. Opt-In Rewards, staking rewards on fiat or stablecoins and DeFi Earn pay a return that is not tied to a clearly halal activity or is structured like interest on a deposit; they are not reviewed by any Shariah board and should be avoided unless a specific structure is checked separately. Kraken has no Islamic account and no Shariah-certified earn product, and its listing review is not a Shariah screen, so each coin must be checked on Liberandum before buying. Reliability is high (7.4/10). As of September 2026 Kraken publishes proof of reserves quarterly with an independent accountant (latest snapshot 30 June 2026, main assets 100.5 % to over 105 % covered). It holds MiCA authorisation from the Central Bank of Ireland (June 2025), FCA registration in the UK, a FinCEN MSB registration in the US, AUSTRAC registration in Australia, a Bermuda BMA licence and, since 21 May 2026, preliminary VARA approval in Dubai. No hack of client funds has been reported in the last five years; past regulatory matters were an OFAC sanctions settlement (USD 362,158.70, November 2022) and an SEC staking settlement (USD 30 million, February 2023). No dedicated user-protection fund is disclosed. Availability: Kraken serves most Muslim-majority countries through its global entities without local licences; it does not serve Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Sudan or Syria. In the UAE, Kraken suspended AED support in February 2023 and says AED funding will be offered by its VARA-licensed entity; as of September 2026 the licence is at the preliminary-approval stage.

No dedicated halal product

Kraken offers no Islamic (swap-free) account and no Shariah-certified earn or staking product as of September 2026. Its rewards programmes (Opt-In Rewards, staking, DeFi Earn) are not reviewed by a Shariah board.

No token screening

Kraken does not screen listed coins for Shariah compliance. Its asset restrictions by region follow regulatory requirements, not Islamic criteria, so each coin must be checked separately.

Step by step

How to trade halal on Kraken

  1. Create an account and pass verification

Sign up on kraken.com or in the Kraken app and complete identity verification (ID and selfie). Enable two-factor authentication or a passkey in Security settings.

  2. Deposit fiat without switching on rewards

Use Deposit to add funds by bank transfer where supported for your country. Keep cash and stablecoin balances out of Opt-In Rewards, staking and DeFi Earn, which pay returns that are not Shariah-reviewed.

  3. Check each coin on Liberandum first

Kraken does not screen coins for Shariah compliance. Before buying, open the coin's page on Liberandum and confirm its halal status.

  4. Buy with spot orders only

Buy in the Kraken app or on Kraken Pro with a spot market or limit order, which settles immediately. Do not enable margin, and do not use Futures, Kraken Derivatives or any leveraged product.

  5. Avoid rewards and lending features

Leave Earn, Opt-In Rewards and DeFi Earn switched off unless a specific structure has been reviewed and found acceptable. Fixed returns on deposits are treated as riba.

  6. Withdraw to self-custody

For long-term holding, use Withdraw to send coins to a wallet you control, such as a hardware wallet, and check the network fee before confirming.
