Liberandum halal verdict

Suitable with care

Not suitableSuitable

Coinbase is a US-listed exchange with licences in the US, EU (MiCA), UK and Singapore and a conditional licence in Dubai, and it keeps client assets segregated. Spot trading with full settlement is available, but Coinbase offers no Shariah-certified product and does not screen coins, so a Muslim user must stay in spot, avoid futures, perpetuals, loans and USDC rewards, and check each coin separately. Its direct service in Muslim-majority markets is limited.

Use

  • Spot trading, coin by coin

Avoid

  • Futures, leverage, options
  • USDC rewards, Borrow
More details

Spot purchases on Coinbase (simple Buy and Sell or Advanced trade) settle immediately into the user's account, which meets the requirement of immediate exchange (qabd) for currency-like assets under AAOIFI Shariah Standard 1 and Standard 20. Futures and perpetual-style futures (Coinbase Financial Markets in the US, Coinbase International for non-US users) involve deferred settlement and leverage and should be avoided. Crypto-backed loans (Borrow) and USDC rewards pay or charge interest-like amounts and are riba under AAOIFI Shariah Standard 1. Staking rewards are not reviewed by a Shariah board and should only be used after a separate check of the protocol. Coinbase has no Islamic account and no Shariah-certified earn product, and its listing review is not a Shariah screen, so each coin must be checked on Liberandum before buying. Reliability is 6.6/10. Coinbase does not publish a Merkle-tree proof of reserves; customer crypto balances are disclosed in audited SEC filings instead. Per its FY2025 annual report it holds a NYDFS BitLicense and state money-transmitter licences, a MiCA licence in Luxembourg covering the EEA, FCA authorisation as an e-money institution in the UK (plus cryptoasset registration, February 2025), a MAS Major Payment Institution licence and a conditional VASP licence from Dubai's VARA. The SEC lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice on 28 February 2025. In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support staff had leaked personal data of 69,461 customers (from December 2024); no passwords, keys or funds were taken from Coinbase, it offered to reimburse customers tricked into sending funds and estimated costs of USD 180-400 million. There is no dedicated user-protection fund. Availability: full service in the US, UK and EU. In Dubai the licence is conditional and the exchange targets institutional clients; access in most other Muslim-majority countries is not confirmed by Coinbase, and Nigeria reportedly blocked access in February 2024.

No dedicated halal product

As of September 2026 Coinbase offers no Islamic (swap-free) account and no Shariah-certified earn or staking product. Its staking, USDC rewards and lending products are not reviewed by a Shariah board.

No token screening

Coinbase lists assets through its own review under its digital asset support policies, which is not a Shariah screen. No Shariah-screened catalogue or filter is offered, so each coin must be checked on Liberandum before buying.

Step by step

How to trade halal on Coinbase Exchange

  1. Register and complete verification

Create an account on coinbase.com or in the Coinbase app and complete identity verification (ID document and selfie). Check that your country is supported; in the UAE the licensed entity serves institutional clients only.

  2. Deposit fiat without rewards

Add cash by bank transfer or card. Do not opt in to USDC rewards and do not use Borrow (crypto-backed loans): both involve interest-like payments.

  3. Check each coin on Liberandum

Coinbase does not screen coins for Shariah compliance. Check the coin's halal status on Liberandum before buying.

  4. Trade only spot

Use Buy and Sell or the Advanced spot order book so both sides settle immediately. Avoid Futures, perpetual-style futures, leverage and options on Coinbase and Coinbase International.

  5. Be careful with staking

Coinbase staking is not Shariah-certified. Use it only if the specific protocol has been checked separately; otherwise hold coins without staking.

  6. Withdraw to self-custody

Use Send to move long-term holdings to a wallet you control, and enable 2FA with a security key or authenticator app.

Reliability in detail

Overall 6.6 of 10

  • Proof of reserves

    4.0

Coinbase does not publish a Merkle-tree or attested proof of reserves. Customer crypto and cash balances are disclosed in quarterly SEC filings and the annual audited financial statements, which gives some independent check but no user-verifiable snapshot.

  • Licences

    10.0

Per the FY2025 10-K: NYDFS BitLicense and US state money-transmitter licences, MiCA licence in Luxembourg covering the EEA, FCA e-money authorisation in the UK (plus cryptoasset registration, February 2025), MAS Major Payment Institution licence, AUSTRAC registration, Bermuda Class F licence and a conditional VARA licence in Dubai.

  • Incident history

    7.0

No hack of Coinbase-held client funds in five years. In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed support staff leaked data of 69,461 users (from December 2024); no passwords, keys or funds were accessed, and Coinbase offered reimbursement to users tricked by follow-up scams (cost estimate USD 180-400 million). The SEC lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice on 28 February 2025.

  • Segregation of funds

    8.0

Per the FY2025 10-K, customer and corporate crypto are ledgered and held separately, custody entities keep separate accounts, and UCC Article 8 means financial assets held for US customers are not Coinbase property. This has not been tested in an insolvency.

  • Insurance fund

    3.0

No dedicated user-protection fund is disclosed. Customer USD is held at FDIC-insured banks and in money market funds; crypto is not covered by a compensation fund.

  • Security practices

    7.0

Coinbase seeks to hold no more than 2 % of assets under custody in hot wallets, keeps cold-wallet keys in secured facilities, and is examined by NYDFS and state regulators. A current SOC 2 or ISO 27001 report was not confirmed in the sources reviewed.
