Liberandum halal verdict

Suitable with care

Not suitableSuitable

Bitvavo is a Dutch exchange licensed under MiCA by the AFM that serves residents of the European Economic Area only. Spot buying and selling with immediate settlement is its core product, but it has no Shariah-certified product or Shariah token screening, so a Muslim user must avoid its Earn lending and fixed staking and check each coin separately.

Use

  • Spot trading

Avoid

  • Auto Earn lending (riba)
  • Fixed staking unless reviewed
More details

Bitvavo is built around spot trading: orders in the app and in the Advanced trading view settle immediately against the user's own EUR or crypto balance, which meets the AAOIFI requirement of hand-to-hand exchange (Shariah Standard No. 1) and the settlement conditions of Shariah Standard No. 20. We found no margin or futures products on Bitvavo. The part of the platform a Muslim user should avoid is Bitvavo Earn: its lending component pays a return for lending crypto, which is riba, and staking rewards should only be used if the staking arrangement itself is judged permissible. Bitvavo has no Islamic account, no Shariah-certified product and no Shariah screening of listed tokens. Reliability is moderate (6.5/10): MiCA authorisation from the AFM since June 2025, passported to the EEA; customer assets held through a separate foundation, Stichting Bitvavo Payments; a quarterly Merkle-tree proof of reserves attested by The Network Firm for a set of major assets; most crypto in insured cold storage. In November 2022 Bitvavo had about EUR 280 million lent to Genesis (DCG group) frozen; the company and its founders backstopped customers from their own funds and we found no report of customer losses. No reserve fund is disclosed. The exchange accepts only EEA residents, so it is not an option for users in the Gulf, Turkey, Southeast Asia, the UK or the US.

No dedicated halal product

Bitvavo offers no Islamic account and no Shariah-certified earn or staking product. Bitvavo Earn combines crypto lending (Auto Earn) and fixed-term staking; the lending part pays a return on a loan of crypto and is not Shariah-compliant, and no Shariah board has certified any part of it.

No token screening

Bitvavo does not screen listed tokens for Shariah compliance. Its listing process is a general commercial and MiCA compliance review, so each coin should be checked on Liberandum before buying.

Step by step

How to trade halal on Bitvavo

  1. Open an account and verify your identity

Sign up at bitvavo.com or in the Bitvavo app as an EEA resident and verify your identity with a valid ID document. Turn on two-factor authentication.

  2. Deposit euros without yield products

Deposit EUR by SEPA transfer or iDEAL, which are free. Keep the balance as plain cash and crypto; do not switch on Auto Earn or any lending option for your funds.

  3. Check each coin on Liberandum first

Bitvavo does not screen tokens for Shariah compliance. Before buying, look up the coin's halal status on Liberandum and skip coins rated non-compliant or doubtful.

  4. Buy and sell with spot orders

Use Buy/Sell in the app or limit orders in Advanced trading. Trades settle immediately against your own balance. Limit orders that rest on the book pay the lower maker fee.

  5. Stay out of Bitvavo Earn lending

Auto Earn lends your crypto for a return, which is riba. Fixed staking is also not Shariah-certified; use it only if you have a scholarly opinion that the specific staking arrangement is permissible.

  6. Withdraw to self-custody

Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Crypto withdrawal fees are dynamic and depend on network conditions; EUR withdrawals go to your SEPA bank account.

Reliability in detail

Overall 6.5 of 10

  • Proof of reserves

    7.0

Merkle-tree proof of reserves attested by The Network Firm; users can verify balances in the web app against the latest attestation (Bitvavo describes it as quarterly). Scope is selected assets (e.g. BTC, ETH, XRP, EUR, ADA, SOL at 31 December 2024), not the whole catalogue, and not monthly.

  • Licences

    6.0

MiCA CASP authorisation from the Dutch AFM since June 2025, passported to 30 EEA countries; DNB registration since 2020 before that. No licences outside the EEA (no UK, US, UAE or Singapore).

  • Incident history

    7.0

About EUR 280 million lent to Genesis (DCG) was frozen in November 2022; Bitvavo guaranteed the amount and the founders added funds, including returning about EUR 100 million in dividends; we found no customer losses. Minor data incidents in September 2022 and April 2024. No regulator fine found.

  • Segregation of funds

    7.0

Customer assets are held through a separate foundation, Stichting Bitvavo Payments, apart from the operating company. The quarterly attestation by The Network Firm confirms 1:1 backing only for in-scope assets; no audit of segregation across the whole catalogue found.

  • Insurance fund

    4.0

No user protection fund is disclosed. Bitvavo offers a one-time account guarantee of up to EUR 100,000 against unauthorised account access and refers to insured cold storage, but we could not confirm coverage amounts from its own pages.

  • Security practices

    7.0

Most crypto held in insured cold storage; two-factor authentication; data centres used by Bitvavo hold ISO 27001 and SOC reports. We found no ISO 27001 or SOC 2 report for Bitvavo itself. No hack with loss of customer funds found.
