Liberandum halal verdict

Suitable with care

Not suitableSuitable

Bitstamp, owned by Robinhood since June 2025, is a long-running regulated exchange (MiCA licence in the EU, FCA registration in the UK, New York BitLicense in the US) where spot trading with immediate settlement is available. It has no Shariah-certified product and no Shariah token screening, so a Muslim user should use spot only, avoid Earn (staking and lending) and derivatives, and check each coin separately.

Use

  • Spot trading
  • Buy/Sell instant orders

Avoid

  • Earn (staking, lending)
  • Derivatives (perpetuals)
More details

Spot buying and selling on Bitstamp settles immediately against the user's own balance, which meets the AAOIFI requirement of immediate exchange for currencies (Shariah Standard No. 1) and the rules on the sale of commodities in organized markets (Shariah Standard No. 20). Bitstamp also offers products a Muslim user should avoid: perpetual derivatives for eligible European customers (futures-style contracts without delivery fail the settlement test), and Earn products, where lending pays a return on lent assets (riba) and staking yields depend on the protocol and are not Shariah-certified. There is no Islamic account, no Shariah-certified earn product and no Shariah screening of listed tokens, so each coin must be checked on Liberandum before buying. Reliability is good (7.2/10): Bitstamp Europe S.A. holds a MiCA CASP licence from Luxembourg's CSSF (May 2025), Bitstamp UK Ltd is FCA-registered and Bitstamp USA holds a New York BitLicense; the company reports more than 50 licences and registrations worldwide. It holds ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2 certifications, says about 95% of crypto is in cold storage and that client assets are held 1:1 and separately from corporate funds, and has been audited annually by a Big Four firm since 2016. The weak points are the absence of a regular, independently attested proof of reserves and of a disclosed reserve fund (Bitstamp cites crime insurance instead). The only major security incident was the January 2015 hot-wallet theft of just under 19,000 BTC (about USD 5.1 million), after which Bitstamp honoured customer balances in full. It holds no local licence in any Muslim-majority market, and whether it serves users in individual Gulf, African and Asian countries could not be confirmed from a primary or reputable source as of September 2026; check at sign-up.

No dedicated halal product

Bitstamp has no Islamic (swap-free) account and no Shariah-certified earn or staking product as of September 2026. Its Earn section offers staking and, in some regions, lending with a return on lent assets, neither of which is Shariah-certified.

No token screening

Bitstamp does not screen listed tokens for Shariah compliance. Its listing review is a regulatory and risk review, not a Shariah screening, so each coin must be checked on Liberandum before buying.

Step by step

How to trade halal on Bitstamp by Robinhood

  1. Open an account and pass verification

Sign up on bitstamp.net or the Bitstamp app and complete identity verification (ID document and selfie). You are assigned to the Bitstamp entity for your country of residence, for example Bitstamp Europe S.A. in the EEA or Bitstamp UK Ltd in the UK.

  2. Deposit fiat or crypto without yield products

Use Deposit to add funds by bank transfer (SEPA, Faster Payments, ACH or wire depending on region) or send crypto from your own wallet. Avoid the 4% card Instant Buy if you can, and do not move the balance into Earn.

  3. Trade on spot only

Buy and sell in the spot Trade view or the simple Buy/Sell screen, where each trade settles immediately against your balance. Market and limit orders on spot pairs are fine.

  4. Avoid derivatives and Earn

Do not use perpetual contracts (offered to eligible European customers) or the Earn section: lending pays a return on lent assets (riba), and staking rewards are not Shariah-certified. Bitstamp has no Islamic account or Shariah-certified product.

  5. Check each coin on Liberandum first

Bitstamp does not screen listings for Shariah compliance. Before buying any coin, check its halal status and methodology notes on Liberandum.

  6. Withdraw to self-custody

Use Withdraw to move coins you intend to hold to a wallet you control, keeping on the exchange only what you actively trade.

Reliability in detail

Overall 7.2 of 10

  • Proof of reserves

    5.0

Bitstamp states it holds client assets 1:1, that it has been audited annually by a Big Four firm since 2016, and that reserves are reconciled daily, weekly and monthly. In November 2022 it said it aimed to release a proof of reserves audit, but no regular, independently attested proof of reserves was found as of September 2026.

  • Licences

    9.0

MiCA CASP licence from Luxembourg’s CSSF (Bitstamp Europe S.A., May 2025), FCA registration (Bitstamp UK Ltd), New York BitLicense and US state money transmitter licences; over 50 licences and registrations worldwide. No licence in any Muslim-majority market.

  • Incident history

    9.0

The only major incident was the January 2015 hot-wallet theft of just under 19,000 BTC (about USD 5.1 million); Bitstamp said customer balances would be honoured in full. No major hack, freeze or client-fund enforcement action found in the last five years.

  • Segregation of funds

    7.0

Bitstamp says client funds are held in separate accounts, detached from corporate assets, with crypto at licensed custodian BitGo and fiat at regulated banks, and that it never lends or repurposes client funds without instruction. MiCA requires segregation; no segregation-specific audit report was found.

  • Insurance fund

    3.0

No disclosed reserve or protection fund with addresses or size. Bitstamp cites crime insurance but does not publish its amount or terms.

  • Security practices

    10.0

ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2 certifications (stated November 2022); about 95% of crypto held in cold storage; 2FA; crypto custody with licensed custodian BitGo.
