Liberandum halal verdict

Suitable with care

Not suitableSuitable

Binance is the largest crypto exchange, licensed in Dubai (VARA), Abu Dhabi (ADGM), Bahrain and Kazakhstan, with a USD 1 billion SAFU fund and a monthly, self-attested proof of reserves. It offers Sharia Earn, a staking product reviewed by Amanie Advisors. A Muslim user can use spot trading and Sharia Earn, but must avoid margin, futures, options and ordinary Earn products. Binance stopped serving EU users on 1 July 2026 and does not serve the US.

Use

  • Spot trading
  • Sharia Earn (BNB, ETH, SOL)

Avoid

  • Margin, futures, options
  • Simple Earn, Dual Investment, Loans
More details

Spot orders on Binance settle immediately into the user's account, which meets the requirement of immediate exchange (qabd) for currency-like assets under AAOIFI Shariah Standard 1 and Standard 20. Margin, USD-M and COIN-M futures, options, leveraged tokens and copy trading of futures involve interest-bearing borrowing or deferred settlement of both counter-values and should be avoided. Simple Earn, Flexible and Locked savings, Dual Investment and Loans pay a fixed or interest-like return and are not reviewed by a Shariah board. The exception is Sharia Earn (launched July 2025): staking of BNB, ETH and SOL under a wakala (agency) contract, reviewed by Amanie Advisors, with no guaranteed return and exclusion of interest (riba), excessive uncertainty (gharar) and non-compliant assets. It is a halal alternative to ordinary Earn for those three coins and is still offered as of September 2026. Binance does not screen its full catalogue for Shariah compliance, so every other coin must be checked on Liberandum before buying. Reliability is 6.7/10. Binance publishes a monthly proof of reserves with Merkle tree and zk-SNARK self-verification (45th report, snapshot 1 August 2026), but no named independent auditor attests it. As of September 2026 it holds a VARA licence (VL/24/04/001, 15 April 2024), three ADGM FSRA licences (operating since 5 January 2026), a Central Bank of Bahrain Category 4 licence, AIFC (Kazakhstan) and Japan FSA licences. In November 2023 Binance pleaded guilty in the US to Bank Secrecy Act, unlicensed money-transmitting and sanctions violations and agreed to pay about USD 4.3 billion; its founder pleaded guilty and stepped down. This was not a loss of client funds. SAFU holds about 15,000 BTC (about USD 1 billion, February 2026) at a published address. Binance obtained SOC 2 Type II (December 2023) and ISO 27001 / 27701 (June 2023) certifications. Availability: Binance serves most Muslim-majority markets. It withdrew its MiCA application in Greece in June 2026 and from 1 July 2026 stopped accepting new EU clients; reports say new orders, deposits and Earn were also halted, while withdrawals remain available. US residents cannot use Binance.com. Indonesian users are served through the licensed group exchange Tokocrypto.

Shariah-compliant earn

Sharia Earn, launched in July 2025, is a staking product for BNB, ETH and SOL structured as a wakala (agency) contract and reviewed by Amanie Advisors. Binance acts as agent and does not guarantee returns. It launched in about 29 countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia and is still offered as of September 2026; availability in a given country should be checked in the app.

  • Sharia Earn

Staking of BNB, ETH and SOL through Binance Earn, built on BNB Locked Products and ETH and SOL staking rather than lending. BNB offers flexible and locked terms; ETH and SOL are locked only. Launched July 2025 in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan and other countries.

Structure · Reviewed and certified by Amanie Advisors. Wakala contract accepted on subscription: Binance acts as agent (wakeel) for the user, with no guaranteed or fixed return; the wakala fee rate is not disclosed in the sources reviewed. Interest (riba), excessive uncertainty (gharar) and non-compliant assets are excluded; the reward mechanisms were reviewed by Sharia scholars before launch.

Partial token screening

Binance screens assets for Shariah compliance only inside Sharia Earn (currently BNB, ETH and SOL). The rest of the spot catalogue is listed through Binance's normal listing review, which is not a Shariah screen, so each coin must be checked on Liberandum before buying.

Step by step

How to trade halal on Binance

  1. Register and complete verification

Create an account on binance.com or in the Binance app and complete Identity Verification (ID document and selfie). Users in Dubai are onboarded by the VARA-licensed entity Binance FZE; EU residents can no longer open accounts as of September 2026.

  2. Deposit without interest-bearing products

Use Deposit or Buy Crypto (card, bank transfer or P2P where offered). Keep the balance in the Spot wallet. Do not move funds into Simple Earn, Flexible or Locked savings, Dual Investment or Loans: they pay interest-like returns and are not Shariah-certified.

  3. Check each coin on Liberandum

Before buying, check the coin's halal status on Liberandum. Binance's listing review is not a Shariah screen; only the three Sharia Earn assets (BNB, ETH, SOL) are screened, and only for that product.

  4. Trade only in Spot

Use Trade > Spot (or Convert) so both sides settle immediately. Avoid Margin, Futures (USD-M and COIN-M), Options, leveraged tokens, trading bots on futures and Copy Trading of futures.

  5. Use Sharia Earn instead of ordinary Earn

If you want staking income on BNB, ETH or SOL, choose Sharia Earn in the Earn section where it is offered in your country. It runs on a wakala contract reviewed by Amanie Advisors with no guaranteed return.

  6. Withdraw to self-custody

Move long-term holdings via Wallet > Withdraw to a wallet you control, and enable 2FA and an anti-phishing code on the account.

Reliability in detail

Overall 6.7 of 10

  • Proof of reserves

    5.0

Monthly proof of reserves since November 2022 (45th report, snapshot 1 August 2026: about 657,000 BTC, 3.98 million ETH, 32.9 billion USDT). Users can verify inclusion via Merkle tree and zk-SNARK proofs, but the reports are self-attested: no named independent auditor attests them.

  • Licences

    8.0

As of September 2026: VARA VASP licence (Dubai, 15 April 2024), three ADGM FSRA licences for the global platform (operating since 5 January 2026), Central Bank of Bahrain Category 4, AFSA (Kazakhstan), Japan FSA, Bappebti via Tokocrypto, AUSTRAC registration. No MiCA authorisation (EU exit July 2026), no FCA registration, no US licence for Binance.com.

  • Incident history

    6.0

No hack of client funds on the exchange reported in the last five years. In November 2023 Binance pleaded guilty in the US to Bank Secrecy Act, unlicensed money-transmitting and sanctions violations and agreed to pay about USD 4.3 billion and retain an independent compliance monitor; its founder resigned. These were AML/sanctions failures, not losses of client funds.

  • Segregation of funds

    6.0

Custody for the global platform sits with Nest Clearing and Custody Limited, an ADGM Recognised Clearing House with a custody stipulation, and the PoR covers client balances. No independent audit confirming legal segregation of all client assets was found.

  • Insurance fund

    9.0

SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) was converted into about 15,000 BTC (about USD 1.005 billion) in February 2026 at a published address; Binance rebalances it to USD 1 billion if it falls below USD 800 million. It is held and managed by Nest Clearing and Custody, regulated by ADGM FSRA.

  • Security practices

    8.0

SOC 2 Type II audit by A-LIGN (December 2023) and ISO 27001 / ISO 27701 certifications (June 2023, for France, Bahrain and UAE operations); no more recent report confirmed. 2FA, withdrawal whitelists and anti-phishing codes. SAFU covers losses from account compromise caused by Binance system vulnerabilities (claims within 90 days).
