KuCoin
KCS#79KCS is the token of the KuCoin exchange: staking it gives holders a share of trading-fee revenue.
Does not clear all 8 Shariah criteria. Needs caution: interest (riba), nature of the asset, gambling (maysir), business model, excessive uncertainty (gharar), usage, and benefit and harm (maslahah).

Can a Muslim hold KuCoin?8 Shariah criteria
1 pass · 7 caution · 0 failPlain KCS pays nothing, but its main yield is a bonus paid inside a custodial KuCoin Earn product whose structure and full funding source are not clearly disclosed.
Riba means interest or any fixed increase on a loan. KCS held in a personal wallet pays no interest. The yield most holders see comes from staking KCS in KuCoin's Earn product: KuCoin says it shares part of its trading-fee revenue with users who stake KCS, and a May 2026 KuCoin blog puts this at 50% of daily trading-fee revenue; reference APRs were about 0.76–0.94% in 2026. Trading fees are payment for a service, not interest, and this is not staking for validation work either.
ShariaQuant argues that the bonus pool also includes margin lending interest; KuCoin's pages do not say that, but they also do not give a full accounting of the pool. Because the structure is custodial and its funding is not fully disclosed, the criterion is caution. The exchange-revenue question itself is assessed under business model.
KCS has real utility inside KuCoin, but little outside it, and authoritative bodies disagree whether crypto tokens are property (mal).
KCS gives trading fee discounts, loyalty levels, access to token launches and listing votes, and card cashback on KuCoin. It is also the gas token of KuCoin Community Chain (KCC), but KCC showed only about 1,700 transactions a day in September 2026, so almost all of KCS's utility depends on one company. Sharlife accepts KCS as property with underlying value; ShariaQuant instead treats it as a claim on the issuer rather than a native protocol asset.
More broadly, Malaysia's Securities Commission Shariah Advisory Council treats unbacked digital currencies as tradable goods, while Darul Uloom Karachi (2026) says crypto tokens are not property, and state fatwa bodies in Egypt, Turkey and the UAE reject cryptocurrency in general. Limited, issuer-dependent utility and this disagreement keep the criterion at caution.
KCS is not a betting token, but its issuer's business is derivatives-heavy and KCS itself trades as a perpetual future.
Maysir means gambling, or gains that depend mainly on chance; ordinary price swings are not maysir. KCS has a real function as KuCoin's fee and loyalty token. Yet the activity around it is heavily speculative: on 27 September 2026 CoinGecko reported about 21,700 BTC of 24-hour volume on KuCoin Futures, which lists 693 perpetual pairs, against about 12,500 BTC on KuCoin spot, so derivatives were about 1.7 times spot that day. KuCoin also lists a KCSUSDT perpetual contract on KCS itself. Because a real function exists, this is caution, not fail.
KCS holders directly share KuCoin's trading-fee revenue, which very likely includes a large share of futures fees, but KuCoin publishes no revenue split to test the limits.
For exchange tokens, the test looks at the income of the issuing exchange. For KCS this matters more than usual: KuCoin says it shares part of its trading-fee revenue with holders who stake KCS (50% of daily trading-fee revenue per a May 2026 KuCoin blog), and it buys back and burns KCS from revenue or profit.
KuCoin's revenue mixes spot fees with fees from futures and margin trading, which is disputed (20% limit; AAOIFI Shari'ah Standard 20 treats futures without delivery as impermissible), and possibly interest from margin lending and income from Earn products, including KCUSD, which KuCoin says is supported by US Treasury securities (clearly impermissible, 5% limit). Derivatives traded about 1.7 times spot on KuCoin on 27 September 2026, so futures fees are very likely a large part of trading fees. KuCoin is private and publishes no revenue breakdown, so the shares cannot be measured and this criterion is rated caution, not fail; the score sits at the bottom of the band because holders receive this revenue directly.
The contract is public, but control is centralised: administrators can blacklist addresses, the burn rule is described inconsistently and the bonus pool is not audited.
Gharar means excessive uncertainty or hidden terms. The KCS contract on Ethereum is verified and public, and supply is falling toward a stated 100 million target. But the contract lets a designated blacklister address, which the owner can reassign, block addresses from transferring KCS, and ShariaQuant notes KuCoin can freeze accounts at its discretion. KuCoin's own pages describe the burn two ways: monthly, based on overall revenue, and 10% of net profit each quarter. The size and funding of the KCS bonus pool are not independently audited.
KuCoin's proof of reserves covers BTC, ETH, USDT and USDC with Merkle-tree verification, but KCS is not among the assets shown. This partial opacity is caution; it is not fail because the verified contract source has no mint function, so new KCS cannot be created on Ethereum at will.
A central use of KCS is staking it on KuCoin to collect a share of exchange revenue that includes disputed income.
Some KCS uses are permissible in themselves: fee discounts on spot trades, access to token launches, card cashback and gas on KCC. But much of KCS's design pushes holders to stake it in KuCoin's KCS Staking product: loyalty levels are set by the ratio of staked KCS to total account assets, and staking brings the revenue-share bonus. That bonus draws on trading fees that very likely include a large share of futures fees, and KCS fee discounts also apply on KuCoin's derivatives-heavy platform.
No data measure how much KCS is staked or used for futures fees, but because the revenue-share use is central by design, this is caution rather than pass.
KCS can be bought on spot markets with full payment and withdrawn to a personal wallet as an ERC-20 token.
This criterion only asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible form. KCS is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum that can be bought on KuCoin's spot market, paid in full and withdrawn to self-custody; Etherscan shows about 11,000 holder addresses. Most trading happens on KuCoin itself and no exchange-traded fund exists, which narrows the routes, but fully paid spot ownership is available.
KCS offers exchange perks, but its issuer pleaded guilty in the US to running an unlicensed money-transmitting business with inadequate anti-money-laundering controls and must block US users unless it registers.
Maslahah means weighing real benefit against real harm. The benefit is modest: lower fees and perks for KuCoin users. On the harm side, in January 2025 KuCoin's operator Peken Global pleaded guilty in New York to running an unlicensed money-transmitting business, after failing to keep an adequate anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer program and to file suspicious activity reports; it agreed to pay about $297 million and to leave the US for at least two years.
In March 2026 a CFTC consent order required it to block US participants permanently unless it registers, and KuCoin paid $22 million to New York in 2023. KuCoin has since gained a MiCA licence in Austria. KCS itself is not shown to be a tool for fraud or sanctions evasion, so harm does not clearly dominate, but it is significant.

How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesSpot KCS with full, immediate payment is available on KuCoin and can be withdrawn to a personal wallet as an ERC-20 token. Spot is rated acceptable for a DOUBTFUL asset; the doubts concern the asset and its issuer, not the spot method.
No exchange-traded fund or physically backed product holding KCS was found, so there is no fund to assess. Any future product would be judged like spot, after checking that it earns no interest and does not lend or stake its KCS for the revenue-share bonus.
KCS is used for card cashback through KuCard loyalty levels and as gas on KCC; no payment volume data were found. Tier-1 bodies such as MUI (Indonesia, 2021) prohibit crypto as a means of payment, so this use is caution.
KCS Staking on KuCoin Earn is not validation work: rewards come from a share of KuCoin's trading-fee revenue, which very likely includes futures fees, and the full funding of the pool is not disclosed. Staking on KCC is possible but the chain is nearly idle. The structure is unclear, so caution.
Always fail: borrowing with leverage and deferred exchange without delivery (AAOIFI SS 20). KuCoin offers margin trading.
Always fail: futures, perpetuals and options are deferred exchange without delivery, with leverage (AAOIFI SS 20). KuCoin Futures lists a KCSUSDT perpetual contract.
Lending KCS, or any asset, for a fixed or guaranteed return is riba, including lending into margin borrowing on the exchange.
The KCS bonus is a share of exchange trading-fee revenue rather than a fixed interest rate, but it very likely includes futures fees, and ShariaQuant says it also includes margin interest; KuCoin does not disclose the pool's full sources, so caution. KuCoin Earn products whose return is interest, such as KCUSD backed by US Treasury securities, would fail.
