About Canton

Canton Coin (CC) pays for network use and rewards participants on Canton, a privacy-focused blockchain for regulated finance.

The Canton Network links separate ledgers of banks, market infrastructures and other firms so that they can settle transactions with each other while each party sees only its own data. It was developed mainly by Digital Asset Holdings, which also created the Daml smart-contract language. Its shared backbone, the Global Synchronizer, and the Canton Coin (CC) token went live on 1 July 2024. The Canton Foundation (called the Global Synchronizer Foundation until September 2025) coordinates its governance.

CC was not sold to investors. Coins are minted only as rewards: to Super Validators, the firms that run the Global Synchronizer; to Validators, which host users; and to providers of approved ("featured") applications, according to the network traffic they bring. Up to 100 billion CC can be minted in the first ten years and up to 2.5 billion a year after that. Network traffic is priced in US dollars and paid by burning CC, and CoinGecko reported about 39.7 billion CC in circulation on 27 September 2026.

The largest uses are institutional. Broadridge's repo platform, which reported about $280 billion of daily repo transactions in August 2025, runs on Canton, and DTCC plans to tokenise US Treasury securities on it. The network also promotes crypto derivatives and stablecoin payments. Repo and Treasuries are interest-based instruments, although the network itself pays no interest on CC.

Governance rests with the Super Validators, who vote on Canton Improvement Proposals. The MainNet configuration lists 13 Super Validator node operators, with reward weight shared among about 90 firms; Digital Asset and DRW's Cumberland hold the largest node shares, and weight is reserved for firms such as DTCC, Nasdaq and Visa. CC began trading on exchanges in November 2025.

What it is used for

  • Paying for Global Synchronizer traffic by burning CC
  • Rewarding the firms that run network infrastructure and featured applications
  • Settlement of tokenised repo and Treasury transactions between institutions
  • Privacy-preserving stablecoin payments between regulated firms
  • Optional currency for application fees on Canton
